A Brief History…
Inside Sounds, founded by Eddie Dattel in 1991, carries on the independent spirit of iconic Memphis labels such as Sun and Stax Records. In early 1993, the label released the highly successful and critically acclaimed Music of the Napoleonic Era and quickly followed that CD release with the head-turning Memphis Music Sampler which included genres as varied as techno-pop, dance, country, adult contemporary and folk! The critics loved it and some slammed it for not sounding Memphis enough!
In 1993, Inside Sounds launched the Memphis Archives label, focusing on blues, jazz, and Memphis-centric music, releasing 21 critically acclaimed CDs reviewed in celebrated publications Rolling Stone magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Jazz Times, among others.
By the mid-1990s, Inside Sounds expanded its catalog with Memphis-themed collections such as the Memphis Belles series, In The Mood For Memphis, and Fried Glass Onions – Memphis Meets The Beatles (Volumes 1–4). These releases showcase the diverse talents of Memphis artists, captivating fans worldwide.
The label has also developed award-winning blues artists, including 2009 Blues Music Award winner Billy Gibson, 2003 Grammy winner David Evans, along with Daddy Mack Blues Band, Sandy Carroll, and Ghost Town Blues Band. With the spin-off label Psychorock, Inside Sounds even offers envelope-pushing comedy with Jimmy The Pervert, heard by hundreds of thousands on Satellite XM radio.
With over 60 titles spanning blues, jazz, classical, comedy, rock and world music, Inside Sounds continues to record, produce, and preserve the soul of Memphis for the digital era. Explore our catalog and hear for yourself!
